As these women shared in both small and large groups we learned that for some of them, they were the only POC in their department or their division - and certainly one of the few at their institution. Seeing so many WOC within Jesuit higher education in a single virtual space, one that was designed to foster community and support was, as described by multiple WOC, a “shock.”

Through the Lens

On a sunny spring day in early May, CKM came together on the picturesque grounds of Cantigny Garden in Wheaton, Illinois for our first photoshoot with Tara Gray of Feel This Moment Photography (https://www.ftmphotog.com/). Our goal was to shoot a group photo of us and updated headshots to go on the website. Tara Gray’s portfolio impressed us with her colors and -- more importantly -- how she captured the chemistry between people. This is what we were looking for in our photos. Tara also fit the bill for CKM because she is a woman of color working as an Administrative Assistant in Harper College, a community college outside of Chicago.

Surviving another Revolution: Retraumatization when history repeats itself 

On Zoom calls, I find myself silent about my obvious pain and hurt. Focus is a fairweather friend that comes like a comet in the middle of the day. Or it may not come at all. I know. I hope we all know: The U.S. operates on systemic racism and violence to keep people of color and women in their place beneath the white power structures. So for me as a Black woman, safety and comfort in being my authentic self in public spaces, like a work environment, is hard to come by.
